What is a Masu?
MASU MASU is a wooden stacking game for the whole family, from young children to grandparents, built around the form of the Masu, a traditional Japanese hinoki box.
For centuries, Masu were used to measure rice, and today they are still raised at celebrations to drink sake.
The name is a play on masu masu, Japanese for “more and more”, which is exactly how the tower grows.
Origin & Production
Conceived by Yoji Caird, MASU MASU stems from childhood memories of playing with vintage wooden dominoes alongside his brother, Nathaniel. Designed to bring that quiet afternoon playfulness to any dinner table, players are encouraged to invent their own house rules and tricks.
Crafted in collaboration with Felix Conran’s studio in Higashiyoshino, Nara, the project blends traditional Japanese craftsmanship with enduring utility.
Made from upcycled Hinoki offcuts sourced from timber building construction, there is a charming poetic rhythm to using building materials for a game of construction. Each set is handcrafted by master masu artisans in Gifu Prefecture.
Materials & Treatment
The Masu and blocks are left entirely unfinished. This raw wood surface provides natural friction, making it possible to build balance defying structures, as well as preserve the pattern, texture, and soothing scent of Japanese Hinoki.
Each set is unique. Over time and through play, the untreated wood will gain rich character and patina.

Frequently asked questions
Where is MASU MASU made?
MASU MASU is made by hand in Ōgaki city Gifu prefecture, Japan.
Ōgaki makes around 80 per cent of Japan’s masu. Each masu is made from hinoki offcuts left over from building and joinery, and assembled using arare-gumi, the traditional joint that gives the masu its character.
