Washika 4-6 seat table
The Washika Table is made from solid hinoki
The design centres on a single joint. In traditional Japanese wooden houses, hinoki pillars are fixed to the foundation beams that run beneath them using a tenon secured with a wooden pin. This joint allowed whole buildings to be raised without nails.
We use the same joint to fix the legs to the table frame, so in effect the table is a house turned upside down: the legs are its pillars and the frame is its foundation.
The top is fitted using a simple technique. A rebate is cut along its edges, leaving a lip that lets the top slot into the frame. Held this way, the top is free to expand and contract as the timber moves through the seasons.
